Are you aiming for a seat in the boardroom in the future?
There is no doubt that this will provide an opportunity for professional growth, will usually enable you to make a greater impact and will probably command a higher salary, but with that comes greater responsibility and, ultimately, personal liability.
If this is the pathway you are seeking it is important that you understand the role of a director, the challenges, and the skills required before taking the leap. It will take time, and of course, hard work, to learn what you need to know to be properly equipped for the boardroom.
Most of all, it is important that you don’t take this pathway just because you think it is expected of you. Is a board role right for you? If you are almost ready to step up to the boardroom, or you have a colleague who you want to support in their progression, make sure that you, or they, understand what is involved.
