Recently, I had the privilege of being invited to speak at the Women’s Development Forum about the important role that education plays in our ongoing professional development. I think we can all agree that the world is far more complex and fast-paced than it was 30 years ago. This has resulted in an ever-increasing need for professionals to be more vigilant about growing their capability and knowledge to remain marketable.
Working as a Programmes Manager at the GTA I spend much of my time discussing ongoing training needs and identifying training ‘gaps’ in the market. With many boards now turning their attention to succession planning, both Rob Jones and I collaborated on a new training qualification designed to support the transition of senior managers into the Boardroom. The result of this IoD and GTA collaboration is the new IoD Introductory Certificate in Board Readiness.
The IoD Introductory Certificate in Board Readiness is an example of how training gaps can be met. This foundation programme not only helps aspiring directors to begin developing the skills and knowledge required to meet the challenges faced in today’s boardrooms; it helps aspiring directors to transition from a senior manager mindset into the mindset of a director.
