Course Overview

The CIPD Level 5 qualification is aimed at expanding learners’ independent practice to enable them to evolve into more senior roles within organisations as people professionals. Using a framework of HR and L&D understanding, behaviours and skills development, this qualification offers opportunity for learners to transition to employment as people managers.

Course Content

The course consists of the following modules:

Induction Day – 10 February 2025 (09:00-16:00)

Organisational Performance and Culture in Practice – 17 February, 3 March & 10 March 2025, 09:00 – 16:00

This unit examines the connections between organisational structure and the wider world of work in a business context. It highlights the factors and trends, including the digital environment, that impact on business strategy and workforce planning, recognising the influence of culture, employee wellbeing and behaviour in delivering change and organisational performance.

Evidence-based Practice – 31 March, 7 April & 12 May 2025, 09:00 – 16:00

This unit addresses the significance of capturing robust quantitative and qualitative evidence to inform meaningful insight and influence critical thinking. It focuses on analysing evidence through an ethical lens to improve decision-making and how measuring the impact of people practice is essential in creating value.

Professional Behaviours and Valuing People – 2 June, 9 June & 16 June 2025, 09:00 – 16:00

This unit focuses on how applying core professional behaviours such as ethical practice, courage and inclusivity can build positive working relationships and support employee voice and wellbeing. It considers how developing and mastering new professional behaviours and practice can impact performance.

Employment Relationship Management – 15 September, 22 September & 29 September 2025, 09:00 – 16:00

This unit examines the key approaches, practices and tools to manage and enhance the employee relationship to create better working lives and the significant impact this can have on organisational performance.

Talent Management and Workforce Planning – 20 October, 3 November & 10 November 2025, 09:00 – 16:00

This unit focuses on the impact of effective workforce planning in considering the development of diverse talent pools and how to contract and onboard the workforce. It also includes analysis of the potential cost to the organisation if this is poorly managed and the tools and interventions required to mitigate this risk.

Reward for Performance and Recognition – 1 December, 8 December & 15 December 2025, 09:00 – 16:00

This unit focuses on how internal and external business factors influence reward strategies and policies, the financial drivers of the organisation and the impact of reward costs. It considers the importance of the role of people practice in supporting managers to make robust and professional reward judgements and the impact of rewarding performance.

Leadership and Management Development – 12 January, 19 January & 26 January 2026, 09:00 – 16:00

This unit builds on the fundamentals of learning and development, taking a closer look at the essential area of leadership and management and how this is critical in developing the right culture and behaviours to establish a working environment which is cohesive, diverse, innovative and high-performing. Choosing the right tools and approaches to facilitate development will ultimately impact organisational effectiveness.

Course Tutor

  • Matthew Stewart

    Matthew Stewart's professional journey began with a distinguished 25-year career in the Armed Forces, where he achieved the rank of Warrant Officer and holding various senior management positions. On leaving the Army in April 2012, he retrained as a Highways Engineer, working for a Local Authority as a Highways Officer for five years. During this time, he also served as a Vocational Workplace Assessor for Civil Engineering and Construction Apprentices at Lincoln College.

    In August 2017, Matthew transitioned to full-time lecturing, specialising in Civil Engineering and Construction in the Built Environment at Lincoln College, delivering BTEC Diplomas, HNCs, and HNDs, as well as Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships. Since May 2022, Matthew has also been working as an Education and Training Coordinator for the Cadet Vocational College in the UK, where he administers, coordinates, and delivers the L3 Award in Education and Training. In October 2022, Matthew moved to Guernsey to join his wife and began lecturing at The Guernsey Institute College. His teaching focus includes Construction and the Built Environment, Construction Management, Human Resources / People Practice, Management, and Initial Teacher Training.

    Matthew is a Chartered Manager of the Chartered Management Institute, a Fellow of the Institute of Administrative management, a Member of the Institute of Leadership, a Fellow of the Society of Education and Training, and has conferred status of Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills.

    Matthew's academic background includes studies at the University of Bedfordshire (Undergraduate), the University of Lincoln, and the University of South Wales (Postgraduate). He is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCLTHE) at Manchester Metropolitan University, and Advanced Teacher Training with the Society of Education and Training to achieve Advanced Teacher Status and become a Chartered Teacher.
